Most folks from South Central Louisiana pepper their speech today with “before Katrina” or “since Katrina.” Some are old enough to have lived through Betsy and Camille, and more than a few still carry the trauma of Audrey. But the fact remains, after the storm, life must go on… and such was the case in Arnaudville after Katrina. This is the story of how the Arnaudville Experiment began and continues today.

Katrina came and went – as did Rita right on her heels. And when it was over, the people of Arnaudville looked around to see what they had left. Whatever it was, they knew that, from now on, those would be the crops on which their future would rise or fall. Since Arnaudville sits on the St. Martin – St. Landry parish line, the economies of both parishes would have to be taken into account. In St. Landry, the major crops are soybeans, trees, and sugar cane, as well as sweet potatoes. In St. Martin, the major crops are sugar cane, soybeans, and rice. Both parishes raise crawfish, with St. Martin Parish designated as the Crawfish Capital of the World. In addition, both parishes raise some of the best looking poultry and cattle found anywhere, with St. Landry raising all the milo we need to keep them that way. So – Arnaudville was obviously not going to starve, but it would take time for those industries to recover. What Arnaudville (and surrounding areas) needed was a resource that could function even in the midst of a hurricane and its aftermath – and, as their assessment of their resources continued, the crop they needed soon became apparent.

What Arnaudville and its surrounding small towns discovered in their midst were hundreds of writers, poets, artists, artisans, photographers, sculptors, furniture builders, theater folks, and musicians. As amazing as it sounds, they actually had the good sense to accept the talent of their people as a valuable resource and, according to the Chamber of Commerce, set immediately about farming that as a crop. The principle at work here is… in Louisiana, the French people can grow anything – and do so quite successfully, we might add. The stranger the crop (at least to others), the more successful the French people in Louisiana will be at cultivating it (i.e. crawfish!).

To market, to market… Oh! How to market this new found crop? ….and what would be the soil in which it would grow? The answer to both questions is “culture.” The French people of Louisiana are going to write about their culture and sing about their culture – and nothing can keep them from it. They have a burning desire to show the world what a magical place they have inherited and will pass on to their descendents. Whether they are cooking Cajun, Creole or a mixture of the two, their food is the best food found anywhere. …and as for language, everything sounds better in Cajun French and it wouldn’t matter if it didn’t – They’re not giving up their food, their language, or their music – not now and not ever!

And so that settled the issue. Talent would be the crop and culture would be the rich soil in which to grow it. They had more than enough of both. The rest is current history told no better than by George Marks on The Arnaudville Experiment.”

Today, the doors of the Arnaudville area have been thrown open wide to talented people everywhere. Come and enjoy the best of life here with us. And – to set your mind at rest about a somewhat weighty issue, studies show that plenty of dancing is an excellent antidote for having been blessed with a steady diet of Cajun and Creole cooking.

In 2007, The Acadiana Humane Society and Sue Rabeaux’s Cat Ranch merged under the umbrella of the Acadiana Humane Society, which is a 501c3 organization. All donations are tax deductible. Since then, they have relied solely on adoption fees, donations, fundraisers, grants, the generosity of community supporters and organizations such as the Krewe Des Chienes and PetsMart Charities. Although they believe in the objectives of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, they receive no funding from either the ASPCA or the National Humane Society.

The Rabeaux family, along with a group of dedicated volunteers, are currently supporting over 80 cats and kittens, as well as a variety of dogs, puppies, and other domestic pets. They need our help.

The Acadiana Humane Society is also in the process of building a hurricane shelter for the cats. To see how that is coming along, with links, photos, and a list of needs, visit the Hurricane Shelter website.

Ways You Can Help the Acadiana Humane Society

Cash Donation

Send your check to:

Acadiana Humane Society / Cat Ranch
P.O. Drawer C
Sunset, LA 70584

Or, look for the PayPal button on the right side of the Acadiana Humane Society Blog.

Or, keep up with where adoption events are going to be held and bring your donations to those locations during the events.

Adopt a Pet

Check their blog to see when upcoming adoption events will be taking place. If you would like to speed the process along, look in the right column of the blog to download a pre-screening application.

Adoption fees cover the following Veterinary Services:
Spay/Neuter surgery
FIV/FeLV testing for kittens / cats
Heartworm testing for dogs
First series of routine vaccinations
Rabies vaccination
Microchipping

Donate Cat / Dog Food, Toys, & Cat Litter

To see the brands of kitten / cat and dog / puppy foods used by the Acadiana Humane Society, Visit their Needs Page. You may also donate the following routinely used supplies:

Advantage, Frontline, etc (flea preventive)
Heartgard (heartworm preventive for dogs)
Pet carriers
Toys for both dogs & cats

A Note from La Belle Arnaudville: If you are donating food for the animals, please donate the brands requested by the Acadiana Humane Society. We have friends who operate another shelter in another city. They lost 6 cats to renal failure last year when they briefly tried to save a little money by purchasing a cheaper brand of cat food.

Clip and Mail Coupons for the Item Listed Above

If you find coupons for dog or cat food, or any of the other routinely used supplies listed above, please clip them and send to the following address:

Acadiana Humane Society / Cat Ranch
P.O. Drawer C
Sunset, LA 70584

Or, bring them to an adoption event.

Be a Guardian Angel for a Special Needs Animal

Become an financial Guardian Angel for one of their Special Needs Pets. Many of the animals rescued by the Acadiana Humane Society have medical problems due to abuse or neglect inflicted by their previous owners. They are committed to saving those animals that are expected to make a full recovery and are otherwise adoptable. Other animals in the care of the Acadiana Humane Society have health issues that necessitate special care or special medications. Sponsorship by their own human Guardian Angel insures that special needs pets are cared for until they are recovered or until suitable placement is found for them.

Make a Donation “In Memory of…” Pets or People

You can make a donation in memory of your beloved pet or pet(s) that have passed on to the Rainbow Bridge. Your pet will then be immortalized on the Little Wings Memorial Wall. The Acadiana Humane Society also accepts donations in honor of human dog or cat lovers who have passed on.

Buy Tupperware

Click to go to Sue Rabeaux’s Tupperware Store. 100% of the profit goes to support the Acadiana Humane Society and to maintain the Cat Ranch. Make sure you have cookies enabled on your computer and that the name Sue Rabeaux appears in the left hand side of the webpage as you are ordering.

Sue also sells her in-stock Tupperware at a discount, so you might want to e-mail her about that if you are interested in saving a bit and still being able to help the animals.

Buy Kitchenware and Collectibles on e-bay

Click to go to Sue Rabeaux’s Kitchenware and Collectibles on e-bay. Again, the profit goes to support the Acadiana Humane Society and to maintain the Cat Ranch.

Donate Lightly Used Items

If you are not in the mood to hold a garage sale or are not brave enough yet navigate the Internet and sell your stuff on e-bay, why not donate lightly used items to the Humane Society for their yard sales and/or for them to sell on e-bay? You would be getting it out of your way and the animals are certainly deserving of the help. E-mail the Acadiana Humane Society for more information at info[at]acadianahumane.org

Hold Your Own Fundraiser

Create and/or host your own fundraiser for the Acadiana Humane Society. It can be anything from a garage sale, bake sale, lemonade stand sales, car washes, raffles, e-bay auctions – the only limit is your imagination. Let them know what you are planning, and they will help spread the word as much as they can! …and so will La Belle Arnaudville!

If you have any questions about anything you see on this page, the Cat Ranch site, or the Acadiana Humane Society Blog, please do not hesitate to e-mail info[at]acadianahumane.org Someone there will be happy to answer all of your questions and will be deeply appreciative of any help you can give to the animals in their care.

One of the most common questions we get, when people inquire about living anywhere in South Louisiana, usually is related to inquiring why we continue to live in an area that is plagued, at least periodically, by hurricanes. The answer is both simple and complex.

Simply put, the people throughout South Louisiana stay, especially following Hurricane Katrina, because this is our home. People who live in other places may think that this is not a wise decision, especially since there is always the possibility that another big hurricane will come along in any given year. However, where would they have us move? Other parts of the country are beset by wild fires, floods, mud slides, earthquakes, active volcanoes, and tornadoes. Busy population centers are faced with airline crashes, ferries that capsize, horrific traffic dangers, and rapidly growing crime rates. Throughout the nation, farmers are losing their land to big agricultural corporations and factory workers are losing their jobs as plants continue to close. Would you have us move there? Surely not!

None of those things happen in South Louisiana but, let us for a moment consider what would happen if long-lasting economic tragedy were to strike us. There is not one person here who cannot grow a garden. Among our numbers are enough hunters and fishermen to feed us all, without our menu changing in any perceptible way. So that is part of why we stay. This is our home. We are safe here, and there is not much we need, in the way of necessities, that cannot easily be obtained here.

We stay because the graves of our ancestors are here. There is something decidedly comforting about living on or near the same land one’s ancestors settled 300 years ago. This may sound odd to those Americans who do not even know who their own grandparents were, but our ancestors – all of them – remain a part of our lives, even today. We know them by name and speak of the details of their lives as if they are still our living neighbors. We grow our gardens in the places they grew theirs, cook using their recipes, and go to church in the churches they built. There is no way that any of us could, or would even consider, leaving the graves of our ancestors behind.

Finally, we stay because of the way our culture itself is structured. Ours is a positive culture in a world that currently seems obsessed with looking for the worst in everything. This is a place where total strangers speak to you with terms of endearment – my baby, my love, my heart, “mah sha.” This is a place where even toddlers are taught the absolute necessity of greeting everyone with a cheek-kiss and a sincere “How’s ya mama-n-em?” Emphasis is placed on true interest in what happened to you today that was good, never on the trials and tribulations of life. While howling to the moon about how much we value our privacy, we probably know more about each other than most folks would ever want to know. If there is a need, someone will see it and come to help without being asked. How could we survive in an outside culture where “privacy” means not even knowing your neighbor? We couldn’t survive such a thing – and so we stay… and live a life filled with music and laughter while the rest of the world shakes its head and wonders how we can be so foolish as to brave a little wind and water every few years.

To those who are still here, go outside – kiss the air – and thank God.
To those who are scattered across the nation and the world – come home.

As I look forward to moving back to Arnaudville (from just across the northern St. Landry Parish line), I cannot help but get excited about seeing old friends and meeting new ones too! I also find myself trying to explain, to far away friends and family, “Why Arnaudville?” The answer to that question is huge and actually necessitated the building of this site. So – come on along. Let us show you this magical little area that is tucked away on a back road in the heart of Acadiana.

First, we have to begin with a little something about why, in this day and age, anyone would get off of the interstate highways and consider any of the little towns in our area. The answer to that is luxury living – but not the kind you think. Here, luxury living is a lifestyle that is being defined and created in a totally new way.

Luxury branding emphasizes value, craftsmanship and exclusivity. The world is now a full decade into the 21st century and in the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Glitz and “bling” are out. People are looking for high quality and lasting value in every dollar they spend and a significant return on their investment for every ounce of energy they put into their communities.

The Arnaudville Area, bordered on the north by Hwy 190, on the south by I-10, on the west by I-49, and on the east by the Atchafalaya Basin is thriving because it is investing in itself and in its people. In the cities, high-end homes and apartments may have seen their values plunge, or sales become stagnant – but in the Arnaudville area, property values are holding their own and often increasing. However, today’s more conscientious consumers are looking for more than just a pretty house. Today, potential residents are beginning to present long lists of quality of life requirements to the areas that court them for their real estate investment dollars. Suddenly, that home for sale needs more than a luxury master bath or a gourmet kitchen. Now, it needs to be near green spaces, art galleries, concerts and language lessons; and a symphony nearby would only sweeten the pot. The same is true of long-term residents. If an area wants to keep their current residents and add to their numbers, it cannot be done unless there is a reason to stay. That reason is the same in every sales transaction. Today, the buyer, be they long term resident or potential new-to-the-area homeowner, must find value, craftsmanship and exclusivity in the quality of life in the place they call home.

Craftsmanship and exclusivity in quality of life? Sure! Why not?
Suppose that “style conscious and upscale” had a different meaning than the one usually associating that phase with how much money one has? Suppose crafting a good life meant celebrating one’s talents and the talents of one’s neighbors? Suppose quality of life meant rebuilding an entire area with the characteristics that people have always longed for so wistfully? Suppose a big storm came and, when it was over, a little town at the junction of 2 historic bayous had the chance to do just that? Suppose that little town decided that every resident, young or old, rich or poor, new to the area or long-time resident is going to be able to proclaim that no one anywhere has a better life than they have?

Welcome to Arnaudville, Louisiana – population 1,400. And surrounding towns: Grand Coteau, Leonville, Sunset and Cecilia

Lifestyle: Luxury (as defined above)!

Amenities include: art galleries; museums; Sunday concerts; music, art and language lessons; bonfires on the levee at Christmas; Jambalaya Festival; 7-Mile Yard Sales (antiques, etc); duty free shopping; artists, artisans, sculptors, writers, poets, musicians, and much much more!

Note: Both Cajun French and English spoken here.

Hi! My name is Jim and I am going to be your hunting and fishing guide on La Belle Arnaudville. As soon as Khaki gets me my own byline, we’ll move this out from under her name and put it in mine.

In the meantime, I want everyone to know that I think this site is going to be great for our hunting and fishing sports in this area. La Belle Arnaudville is giving us our own spot where we can collect and organize every scrap of information about Area 6, including the best WMA for deer and duck.

La Belle Arnaudville is also giving us a place to upload our kill pictures (and maybe brag a little). Of course, this will also give us a place to gripe when things don’t work out right. Did you see that rain on the opening morning of squirrel season? I talked to lots of folks about it and nobody had much luck. Neither of my boys even fired a shot. Oh well – that’s how hunting is sometimes…

Leave us a comment. Tell us what you want to see in the hunting and fishing section of La Belle Arnaudville and we’ll do everything we can to see to it that you get it.

Got to run… Gotta go see a man about a duck lease…

La Belle Arnaudville is an online resource for those who live, work, and play in and around Arnaudville, Louisiana. This entire area is growing into a fine cultural center and we invite you to come grow with us.

If you decide to become a regular reader (and we certainly hope you do!), you will soon see that there is something on La Belle Arnaudville for everyone. We cover events that range from the Symphony to the opening of squirrel season, horse racing to fashion shows, how to cook dat duck to who is starring in the latest theater production.

As we age (yes – many of us are Baby Boomers), we now realize that it is quality of life that really matters. Imagine how thrilled we were to discover that the Arnaudville area has exactly the right mix of characteristics to make it a real destination for those who are looking for a special place to either raise a family, retire, or vacation.

…..so – come on along… let us tell you all about where we live and about our many different lifestyles. Who knows? You might want to come and live here too!
